The Canadian financial wing of struggling automaker Chrysler is closing offices in three cities and doing all of the work out of Toronto in a cost-cutting move that will affect 145 workers.
Chrysler Financial Canada said yesterday it will close its business centre in Calgary immediately, followed by its Montreal and Windsor, Ont., offices in April 2009.
Company spokesperson Jelena Jelich said some of the affected employees have been offered relocation packages, but it's too soon to know how many will take them.
Richard Cooper of industry research firm J.D. Power and Associates said Chrysler's goal "is to stay alive and keep the business running ... do whatever they can to do that without hurting their ability to conduct business as much as possible."
