A disgruntled patient might be responsible for a bomb scare that shut down a medical centre and busy streets in Oshawa for several hours yesterday.

Witnesses reported a man left the Glazier Medical Centre at Gibb St. and Simcoe St. S. without receiving the medical care he was looking for and returned shortly after 10:30 a.m. with a package. He left the package at the centre, claiming it was an explosive.

Clinic staff organized an evacuation of the building and police shut down area streets as they examined the package.

"That's a busy part of town," said Staff Sgt. David Brown of Durham Regional Police. "It really inconvenienced a lot of people."

Around 3:40 p.m., the police Explosive Disposal Unit determined the package wasn't a bomb.

A 53-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident. He will be given a mental health assessment.
