A 40-year-old woman is in hospital in critical condition after being struck by a car after getting off of a TTC bus in the city's east end.

It happened just after 7 p.m. this evening. The woman had just exited a TTC bus on Ellesmere Rd., near Deep Dene Dr., and had waited for it to leave before apparently crossing between intersections, said Sgt. Tim Burrows.

As she crossed from the south side to the north side of Ellesmere Rd., she was struck by an eastbound Chrysler Neon, Burrows said.

"The street had plenty of lighting but unfortunately, the victim was dressed in all-dark clothing," he added.

She was taken to hospital with life-threatening head injuries and a number of broken bones in her lower body.

Burrows said it was too soon in the investigation to determine whether charges would be laid.

Ellesmere will likely remain closed between Morrish Rd. and Scarboro Ave. into the early morning hours.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 416-808-1900. Crime Stoppers accepts anonymous tips at 416-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.222tips.com.
