You could buy that vegetable-died hemp organic T-shirt instead of that pesticide cotton sweatshop version. Or you could just decide not to buy a T-shirt at all. Or anything new. For a whole year.
That's what Consuelo Marano's family did.
No new birthday gifts, no fresh-cut flowers, no video games for her nine-year-old son, or new lip-gloss for her 14-year-old daughter Marta, who unwittingly was the experiment's inspiration.
